Specialties & Techniques
John Thompson specializes in a range of advanced bodywork techniques, including:
Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy (MAT) – Based on the groundbreaking work of Erik Dalton, MAT combines osteopathic principles, muscle balancing, and joint mobilization to correct postural distortions and relieve nerve entrapment. Many of the techniques in MAT are taken from Osteopathy, Orthopedic and Myofascial Massage.
Thai Massage & Thai Yoga Massage – A therapeutic blend of acupressure, deep stretching, and rhythmic movement that promotes flexibility, joint health, and relaxation. John has also trained in Table Thai Technique.
Deep Tissue Massage – Targeted pressure to release chronic muscle tension, break down adhesions, and restore mobility.
Myofascial Release – Gentle, sustained pressure to release fascial restrictions and restore the body’s natural alignment and movement. Used in both Mysoskeletal Alignment Techniques and in Manual Osteopathy and Massage.
Bowen Therapy – Bowen Therapy, is a gentle, non-invasive bodywork technique that stimulates the body’s natural healing response. It involves a series of precise rolling movements over muscles, tendons, and fascia, with pauses in between to allow the nervous system to reset. Bowen Therapy aims to restore balance, reduce pain, and improve overall function by encouraging the body to heal itself, often with lasting effects after just a few sessions.
- Trigger Point Therapy – Trigger Point Therapy focuses on identifying and releasing tight, hyperirritable spots in muscle tissue that cause pain and tension both locally and in referred areas. By applying sustained pressure to these trigger points, this therapy helps reduce muscle knots, improve range of motion, and relieve chronic pain.
- Manual Osteopathy – Manual Osteopathy is a hands-on, holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on restoring balance and alignment in the body by treating the root causes of pain and dysfunction. Practitioners use a combination of gentle yet effective techniques to improve mobility, enhance circulation, and support the nervous system. The eight main techniques used in Manual Osteopathy include: Osteoarticular (Joint Mobilization), Myofascial Release, Cranial Osteopathy, Visceral Manipulation, Lymphatic Drainage, Muscle Energy Technique (MET), Counterstrain, and Positional Release. This integrative therapy is ideal for treating musculoskeletal pain, digestive issues, stress, and postural imbalances without the use of drugs or surgery.
- Thai Foot Reflexology – Thai Foot Reflexology is a traditional healing practice that applies pressure to specific points on the feet believed to correspond with organs and systems throughout the body. This relaxing and therapeutic technique combines elements of massage, acupressure, and stretching to stimulate energy flow, improve circulation, and promote overall well-being. It’s especially effective for relieving stress, fatigue, and tension held in the lower body.
- Swedish Massage Technique – is a classic massage technique that uses long, flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements to relax muscles and promote overall relaxation. It improves circulation, reduces stress, and helps release muscle tension in a gentle, soothing way. Ideal for those new to massage or seeking stress relief, Swedish Massage supports both physical and emotional well-being.
- Gua Sha and Cupping (Ventosa) are traditional healing techniques used to release tension, stimulate circulation, and support the body’s natural detoxification. Gua Sha involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to break up stagnant blood and energy, often used to relieve muscle pain, inflammation, and boost immunity. Cupping uses suction from glass or silicone cups placed on the skin to draw blood to the surface, helping to relieve deep muscle tightness and promote healing. Both methods are commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and are known for leaving temporary marks that indicate areas of stagnation or blocked energy.
